Oahu, Hawaii

In addition to gorgeous beaches and near-perfect weather, Oahu, Hawaii offers knowledge-hungry students the experience of a lifetime.

Your first stop should be to the Diamond Head State Monument, which was named as such by 19th century British sailors who thought they had discovered diamonds in the crater. What the sailors found were, in fact, worthless crystals – but you still shouldn’t miss a trip to this gorgeous site, if ill-named.

Students can explore the moderately-challenging hiking trail, as well as several underground tunnels (bring a flashlight!)

Of course, you won’t want to miss the USS Arizona or USS Oklahoma memorials at Pearl Harbor, which serves to commemorate the 1941 attack that killed over 1,000 people.

Students can also visit the submarine museum located on Pearl Harbor, as well as an extensive aviation museum for true history buffs.

LuauFor both entertainment and educational purposes, attending a traditional luau should not be overlooked when you visit Oahu. You’ll celebrate among island natives with food, drink and entertainment; you’ll even get to experience a traditional hula dance, and experience the compelling rhythm of the hula.

If you enjoy learning about the history and culture behind the Hawaiian and Polynesian people, take a trip to the Bishop Museum. Explore a variety of artifacts, photographs and exhibits that are sure to take your breath away.

For a “delicious” journey, visit the Dole Plantation where a variety of exciting activities await you. First, students will enjoy the challenging plantation maze, which can take up a surprising amount of time as you find your way through. Afterwards, take a guided tour of the plantation to learn about the history of the pineapple, as well as traditional agricultural practices of Hawaii.

If you enjoy marine life, you definitely don’t want to miss visiting the Sea Life Park, where various marine animals are held. Become captivated by dolphins, sea lions, penguins and more in this interactive, hands-on nature park.

Always dreamed of riding in a submarine? When you visit Oahu, you’ll get the chance to experience Hawaii’s only REAL submarine tour! Atlantis Submarines offers students an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience to explore the depths of the ocean while riding in the comfort of an actual submarine.

Art-lovers will enjoy beautiful artistic works by a variety of artists native to Hawaii. All of the artwork is displayed on a fence, adjacent to the Honolulu Zoo; it’s a unique setting for one-of-a-kind works of art.

If you’d like to view additional art work, Cedar Street Galleries displays a variety of art from local artists, both historically renowned and emerging artists alike. You’ll view gorgeous artwork from landscapes, to seascapes and everything in between. You don’t want to miss this fabulous gallery!

Finally, a great way to relax after a long day of sightseeing, galleries and attractions would be a visit to the Honolulu Botanical Gardens. The gardens offer five different sites for students to explore, and are home to a diverse selection of exotic tropical flora and fauna.

While Oahu may be famous for beautiful weather and gorgeous coastline, it’s also home to a variety of educational attractions that make any visit to the island complete. Once you visit Oahu, you’ll have memories that will last a lifetime.
